Let’s Move Outside! on the Girard Trail
The Girard Trail was the eighth one we walked as part of the Erie County Let’s Move Outside! project. This trail is pretty easy, and the map is very accurate, listing 27 historic landmarks along the way. As usual, we brought along our Cairn Terrier rescue pups, Nutmeg and Nora, and 3.5 miles later, they were still going strong.
On this trail, which is completely contained within the town of Girard, on well-marked streets, you’ll pass by two of the houses owned by Dan Rice, who used to winter with his circus in Girard. You’ll also see his daughter’s house, which is the most-impressive of the three.
The trail wanders past the Girard Cemetery and St. John’s Cemetery, in addition to the old Marx Toys factory and the Girard Wrench Factory. You’ll cross and re-cross railroad tracks along the way, too.
Toward the end of the trail, you’ll take a bit of a digression south on Walnut Street to pass by the Charlotte Elizabeth Battles Memorial Museum and the R.S. Battles Farmhouse, also known as the Yellow House. Because it’s toward the end of the trail, you might be tempted to skip it, but don’t. It’s worth the extra steps.
In September, when we visited this area, rolling fields of corn stalks at end-of-life surrounded the Battles homes. The most interesting discovery, and one that will ensure that we revisit the area, is the existence of a nice walking trail at the end of the farmhouse property. I also look forward to visiting the museum and the farmhouse when they are open.
