Let’s Move Outside! on the Perry 200 Commemoration Trail
Success! We completed our Erie County Recreational Passport from the Let’s Move Outside! project by walking the Perry 200 Commemoration Trail on a sunny, Sunday afternoon.in late September. As we started out at the trailhead on Dobbins Landing, families with small children, a few casual fishermen, and even a wedding party were enjoying the Presque Isle bayfront.
After our two Cairn Terrier rescues, Nutmeg and Nora spilled out of the car, we headed up the hill toward downtown Erie. It seems everywhere we go with those pups, various people stop to tell us how cute our dogs are. One woman, shuffling along with a walker and an attendant asked if they were brother and sister. We let her know that they are indeed siblings, but actually sisters. I suppose it’s no surprise that Nutmeg and Nora turn heads, with their matching, flowing blonde hair. Or, as they scurry along, they look like they have centipede legs under their skirts of fur.
About six blocks up State Street, we walked along Perry Square and noticed that the water in the fountain was flowing pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Pink ribbons were also tied on some of the trees. The Square was teeming with life that day. We are fortunate to have such a beautiful green space preserved in our city.
After a stroll along Millionaire Row to Cascade, we headed north toward the bayfront. For us, the best part of the walk was the Bayfront Promenade from Cascade Street all the way to State Street. Along the Promenade, we stopped to read the plaques that highlighted the history of Presque Isle Bay and the visions for the future. We also noticed a fenced off area where it appears there was once a staircase heading down the bluff. We discussed how we hope they’ll build another set of stairs down to a bridge that would cross the bayfront and give the lower west side residents easy access to many the summer concerts held at Liberty Park.
As we approached State Street, we made sure to walk on Dobbins Lane, which is a preserved area dating back to 1890 made of Medina stone. There must have been a lot of jostling going on when buggies traversed that stone. And we complain about potholes from the comfort of our shock-absorber-supported vehicles?
As we neared the end of the walk, we experienced another one of the surprises we have been treated to during our journey of the 10 trails in the Let’s Move Outside! project. Of all the times we have driven up and down Dobbin’s Landing, we never had a proper appreciation of all the fishing boats docked on the east side of the Landing. In fact, as we strolled along, we observed a group of men gathered around a stainless steel sink while one of them cleaned a very large fish and dropped the pieces into plastic bags.
At the end of the dock, we mused about the statues of a seal and a dolphin located there. If there are seals and dolphins in Lake Erie, I believe that either we have a problem, or the seals and dolphins do!
Invigorated from our hike and agreeable to seeking out more even more hiking trails, we approached our car, and a women in a large SUV next to us asked, “What kind of dogs are those?”
