Let’s Move Outside! on the Union City Area School District Trail
It seemed like Nutmeg and Nora, our Cairn Terrier rescues, could sense that adventure was in store for them on Labor Day morning, and indeed it was. Putting Jim’s spreadsheet to work, the one he developed before we started our first hike of the 10 included in the Let’s Move Outside! program, we determined that we could knock off both the Union City and the Corry trails in one trip.
The map in the Erie County Recreational Passport shows the trailhead sitting near the gazebo located next to the parking lot, which is on the middle/high school property. If you go there, know that the gazebo is gone, so instead, just park in the lot, and walk along Academy Drive until you reach the sign.
The trail itself is rather narrow and primitive. You won’t find any orange spray paint alerting you to tree roots on this hike. The path has a few offshoots that make for some uncertain moments, but even if you turn in the wrong direction, the trail is only a half-mile long, so you won’t be lost for long.
From the trail’s exit behind the middle/school, we could see our car. As we approached it, we saw another car slow down near the trail sign, and we figured these were fellow Let’s Move Outside! hikers. A quick conversation with the couple confirmed that they were, and we gave them the lowdown on the trail, but not the pass key that the husband, not so jokingly, asked for. Having checked off the quick Union City hike, we headed off to Corry and the attempt of our seventh trail.
