Tops is Tops Today
Today, I stopped in at Tops Friendly Market, because it was close to the UPS store, where I had just shipped a package. I don’t usually shop there, but thought I could pick up a few things before heading home. So, I tossed some broccoli, peppers, romaine, mushrooms, and bananas into my cart and headed for the checkout.
The cashier held out her hand immediately, expecting me to have my Tops loyalty card.
“Oh, you don’t have a card?” she asked.
“I do, but I don’t have it with me, and I don’t have that much stuff anyhow,” I said.
As she started scanning my items, she remarked that the mushrooms would have been on sale if I had my card and also my bananas. Oh well, I thought.
“Does anyone have a card?” the cashier asked to everyone around us.
Three people spoke up. Two were employees and one was the woman who had just checked out before me. That woman held out her keys that had the little card attached.
“We’re not really allowed to do this,” the cashier remarked with a sly grin.
“What do you mean?” asked the lady in front of me. “She’s my niece.”
“Thanks, Auntie,” I said, feeling all warm and fuzzy inside.
Why, it seems that Tops really is a friendly market!
Wow, nice! I’ve been yelled at before by Giant Eagle cashiers for trying to share my card with strangers in need. 🙁
