Nora after foot surgery

A couple of weeks ago, I noticed a growth on one of our Cairn Terrier rescues’ right paw. It was dark in color and about the size of a small marble. I had never noticed this bump on Nora before.  When I tried to examine the growth, Nora would retreat, so I knew it was…

Nutmeg and Nora look pretty confident on their walk along Misery Bay at Presque Isle State Park .

When I used to walk Happy and Scout, our 100-pound-plus Labrador retrievers, I was often annoyed by the little-dog walkers we’d encounter, who acted as if mine would engulf theirs like Jaws off the beach at Amity Island. Now that Happy and Scout are somewhere over the rainbow bridge, and I walk our Cairn Terrier…

Nutmeg "Kissing" Nora (I'm not really sure what she's doing.)

Well, it’s been five months we’ve checked in on Nutmeg and Nora, our two Cairn terrier rescues. You might have been wondering if we gave them away, gave them back, or just gave up. I’m happy to say that Nutmeg and Nora are still here and are making progress every day. Do they still have…

Even if they have identical toys, the best one is the one that the other one has.

Okay, these Cairn Terrier rescues didn’t exactly make the movie. I did. But they do star in it. For some reason, it took me a while to even realize that I should try and tape them, and then after I did, I realized that I’ve never put a video of them on my blog. As…

Nutmeg howling because Nora's hogging the ball. Surprisingly, they don't fight over toys or food.

Last night’s Dog Whisperer TV show featured fighting dogs, Ruby and Jinx, who Cesar said literally wanted to kill each other. These two dogs seemed similar to Nutmeg and Nora, our two Cairn terrier rescue dogs in that one of them, Jinx, was insecure, like Nora. Seeing those two terriers go at it on TV made me…

Ann & Nora

From December 27, 2011  We could really use Cesar Millan, from the Dog Whisperer TV show, to roller-blade over to the east coast and straighten out our Cairn Terrier rescues. Nutmeg and Nora’s notorious spats reached new heights over the past couple of weeks. I’ll bet Cesar could figure out what causes their conflicts and tell us how we can…

Nora and Nutmeg fixate on the partial ball

Every morning, at 6:30 a.m., I let Nutmeg and Nora, our Cairn terrier rescues, outside. When they come in, I wash their bowls and feed them. They seem to like when I hang around as they eat. As I’ve mentioned before, although these two dogs have their moments of conflict, it’s never over food. They start…

Nore and Nutmeg with the Blue Ball

Today, Nora was doing the funniest thing with a small, blue racquetball. Starting with the ball in her mouth, she’d toss it up in the air and then run after it as it bounced along the carpet. She did this time after time, and I wished I had a video camera, or any kind of…

Nutmeg and Nora Cohabitating

Earlier today, I actually had the feeling that we might have made a mistake adopting these dogs. Instead of getting better at housetraining and getting along, it seemed that Nutmeg and Nora were backsliding.  They got in such a nasty fight the other day that when I was trying to pull them apart, my hand…

Nutmeg and Nora shortly after their adoption on September 10, 2011

On Monday, September 12, we had to go to work and leave Nutmeg and Nora in their crate during the day. I planned to come home at lunch time and let them out. I can imagine how much they cried when we left. The rescue organization gave me the name of the dogs’ vet, so…
