When a popular TV series ends, what becomes of its sets and props? Oftentimes, they’re auctioned off, so that devoted fans can keep a memento as they mourn the loss of their screen friends. That’s what happened with more than 200 items from the Mad Men sets. Last spring, Screenbid offered props and set decorations taken straight from the long-running, delicious drama about 1960s Madison Avenue advertising, which aired on AMC from 2007-2015.
By the time the auction closed, winning bids ranged from $50 for a shopping-bag set to $42,500 that won a 1964 convertible. Here’s a list of the seven highest winning bids from the Mad Men auction.
Don Draper’s 1964 Chrysler Imperial $42,500
In the first episode of Mad Men, Don Draper tells his client, “Happiness is the smell of a new car.” Don must have been very happy in season four when got behind the wheel of a brand new 1964 Imperial Crown Convertible. Only 922 of them were built, and fewer than 200 survive today. Everything works in this beauty, except the clock, which seems fitting.
Don’s Box of Secrets from Adam Whitman $7,000
For years, Don Draper hides a deep, dark secret from everyone close to him. The only evidence of the truth is kept in an old shoebox, but, secrets rarely stay buried forever, and Don’s threatens to unravel everything he has worked so hard for, since he returned from the Korean War.
SCDP Office Sign $7,000
It’s interesting that a sign with just four letters could demand such a hefty price. This sign was literally cut from the wall of the set. It will certainly inspire conversation in its new home, and at the price paid, if it doesn’t on its own, the new owner will probably make sure to mention it.
Don & Megan’s Apartment Set Design Floorplan $3,200
There couldn’t be a bigger contrast between the stately suburban two-story Don and Betty lived in and Don and Megan’s high-rise contemporary apartment. This sprawling space with the sunken living room always managed to seem cold and empty.
Peggy Olson’s SC&P Office Couch $3,100
When Peggy Olsen walks into her boss’s corner office on her first day and finds him sleeping on the couch, she probably has aspirations of having her own fancy office. Just a few years later, she’ll have an office space with windows and a burnt-orange couch where she and her creative team dream up winning tag lines and presentations.
Don’s Purple Heart Medal $2,900
What good is a Purple Heart if you can’t show it to anyone? Don Draper has to hide his away in a drawer, but the new owner can proudly display this piece of Man Men history, and tell the story behind it, too.
Pete Campbell’s Blue Abstract Painting $2,400
Pete Campbell is a young man who constantly seeks the approval of others. To get it, he sometimes (often) acts inappropriately. He’s the kind of person who thinks that a work of art will impress someone more than his own qualities and talents would.
